WHY WRESTLING?

POPULARITY:

Youth wrestling is a sport that is growing in popularity across the US. It is a great way for kids to exercise, learn discipline, and develop teamwork skills.

COST:

The cost of wrestling is minimal but also depends on the wrestler. For new wrestlers the cost of registration is $50. This includes the 5 week introductory practices as well as practice after the coaches have placed the beginner into a regular session with the returning wrestlers.

If a wrestler is looking to compete either individually or on a team, they will need a singlet. The association has these available for each wrestler. All we ask for it a $60 check made out to MAWA to be held until the singlet is returned. Once the singlet has been returned to the association, the check will be returned to the parent. We also offer a selection of used wrestling shoes that are available on the first day of practice. These may also be purchased online or from a sporting goods store.

Protective equipment includes headgear and mouthguards which can also be purchased at a sporting goods store. The association does have a limited supply of headgear available.

Additionally, those wrestlers who would like to participate in competitions will have an entrance fee at all individual tournaments. The association will cover all team registration fees.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:

The level of difficulty depends on the level at which the wrestler is competing. A general rule of thumb is that the K-3 team is the easiest level of competitive play and the K-6 team is a harder level of competition.

At individual competitions, however, the hosting team usually takes into account the number of years a wrestler has been wrestling when they create their round-robin play, trying to keep new wrestlers and experienced wrestlers separate.

GLOBAL REACH:

Youth wrestling dates back thousands of years and is practiced around the world. It is a popular sport at both the high school and collegiate levels as well.

INJURIES:

Wrestling does involve a certain amount of risk, but when proper safety precautions are taken, the risk can be greatly reduced. One of the biggest dancers is the possibility of head and neck injuries which is why it is so important for wrestlers to wear appropriate protective gear including headgear and mouthguards.

In addition, our coaches will stress the importance of using proper techniques when wrestling. When wrestlers learn to properly execute moves and avoid dangerous positions, they can significantly reduce their risk of injury.

PHYSICAL FITNESS:

Wrestling is an intense and demanding sport but is also extremely rewarding. It teaches discipline, self-control, and perseverance, as well as helps kids develop strength, speed, and agility.
